Pavel Juráček based The Situation of the Wolf on Jack London's short story Unexpected. It was, however, not intended as its reverential adaptation. While he did take over the basic outline of the story from the times of the "gold rush" at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, he did not use the actions of the main characters, which do not emerge from the classic gold digging stories. He replaced the color-predictable desire for wealth with a raw probe into human instincts. He created an extremely impressive, existential drama on the ground plan of a small community, given a chance in the boundless landscape of the far north and its relentless natural order. Intimate, economical in all aspects, and at the same time magnificent and "widescreen".

The Situation of the Wolf is published at the occasion of the 80th birthday of Pavel Juráček (August 2, 1935).
